Bialowieza Forest Tour – Meeting with Bisons
From 410 EUR / 455 USD
The Białowieza Forest was inscribed on the list of world heritage in 1979 and is under strict protection, which means that man can not in any way interfere in its ecosystem. A characteristic feature is a large amount of dead wood (25% of trees) which, as a result of the decomposition of dead trunks, causes unprecedented growth of fungi and invertebrates, as well as improved soil fertility.
The reserve includes over 1000 species of plants, 120 species of birds, 52 species of mammals, and more than 10,000 species of insects.
The oldest traces of a man in this wilderness come from 4,500 years before our era (that is 2,000 years before the pyramids were built). The primal man dealt in this time with burning charcoal and hunting.
The symbol of the Białowieza Forest is the European bison. It lived in these areas more than 120,000 years ago and the last individual living in the wild was killed around 1920. The bison population was reconstructed from 12 living in captivity.
Of the 4,500 European bison living in the world – 950 bison live in the Białowieza Forest. The male weighs 700 kg (female 450) and eats 50 kg of feed per day, which takes him 80% of the day.
The result is a simple conclusion that although it does not have a lot of intelligence, it knows everything about vegetarianism.
