Built within 10 years on a cruciform plan is currently the largest church in Poland and one of the largest in the world. On the square in front of the Basilica may accumulate quarter of a million of believers.
To the church lead 33 steps referring to the years of the life of Jesus Christ on earth.The facility has 365 windows and 52 doors, which symbolizes the days and weeks of the calendar year.
The dome of the temple (higher than the dome of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul) has three layers of sheathing. External – a gold-plated aluminum. Middle – a thermal insulation. Internal – a silver and gold decorations.
On top of the tower placed the 13-meter cross, and inside the 15-ton bell called Mary the Mother of God. From the top of the tower, where is a terrace – extends in good weather view of the distance of 30 kilometers.
Lichen. The temple was built in the place of the apparitions of Our Lady.
The story begins from the nineteenth century and the Napoleonic Wars, when mortally wounded soldier praying and clutching a locket – on the battlefield he saw a beautiful woman in magenta dress with the sign of the white eagle on the chest. The woman, which was the Mother of God, healed him. Soldier, after returning home, found the image truly depicting the Virgin Mary, and put it in the chapel in the wood not far from Lichen. After his death the next revelation happened to a local shepherd and the miraculous image protected the people during the great plague of cholera. Those who believed and came to the forest to pray to the Virgin Mary miraculously avoid the disease or they got healthy.
At the place of the apparitions, after 150 years, built basilica of Our Lady of Lichen.
