In early April 1941, during the Jewish holiday of Passover, abolished the existing wire fence and crew of Polish masons began to rise wall around the ghetto. It was built in the shape of matzevas – Jewish tombstones (specific sense of humor of Germans).
German Governor’s wife in this way described the building: “In Krakow, my husband built all around of the ghetto the walls in oriental style, with beautiful arches and battlements. Jews in Krakow really can not complain. The truly elegant wall with Hebrew taste”.

In early 1942, the selection of arriving prisoners held at the railway ramp Judenrampe front of the camp.
Columns of newcomers on foot passed through the gate. At the beginning of 1944, to improve the process of selection and death – extended railway tracks and put them directly into the camp.
