Majdanek concentration camp. Among 150 thousand prisoners who passed through Majdanek, according to the latest findings, died nearly 80,000 people, including about 60,000 Jews. The first lawsuit of the SS officers crew took place shortly after the liberation of the camp - in the second half of 1944 (Auschwitz was liberated only in January 1945). Transcript from the process:
"Prosecutor: - Does the accused person pleads guilty, and what explanation he will submit to the court?
First accused SS-man: - I do not admit guilt, that I killed someone.
Prosecutor: - What would the accused person do if instead of Poles in the camp were Germans and German children ?
The second accused SS-man: - Then I would shoot myself in the head."
None of the accused persons pleaded to guilty, but they confirmed that in the camp were made crimes. By judgment of the Polish Court, in December 1944 all five accused persons were hanged in the camp at Majdanek.
Majdanek. The Crematorium. Currently, reconstructed after an attempt to destroy by Germans. Placed inside furnaces were connected by underground canals with 12-meter chimney. Combustion temperature reached 700 C, which allowed to burn body within 15 minutes. If the number of victims was too high in relation to the possibility of stoves, the bodies was laid on grates made from rails and, before burning, poured gasoline. Unburned bones were ground in special mills and scattering around the area.
Currently, in the part of the monument called Mausoleum - kept ground mixed with the ashes of prisoners. To wind not to blow them around - the area was covered with so-called glass water.
