Sitting lion with the head facing east put left paw on a shield with the coat of arms of Lviv.
Before World War II, Lviv belonged to Poland and was a major cultural center of the East. After the war, it was allocated to Soviet Union (republic of Ukraine).
The monument is a replica of a lion from contemporary destroyed Polish cemetery in Lviv and symbolizes Polish sentimental relation with lost lands.
However, in the coat of arms of the city of Lublin is the image of a goat jumping on a vine.
In memory of goats, which fed in the Middle Ages children which hid from the Tatars. Sculptor confused a sex of the animal and instead of the milk goat, he presented a powerful old cap.
Versions of confusion causes of the sculptor are extreme - from misunderstanding the Latin word "goat" - to a common state of intoxication.
Lublin. Krakow Gate.
Representative entrance to the royal and parliamentary retinues coming from Krakow, also served a defensive and observational function.
It is a conglomeration of different styles. Over the years, added new elements to it.
Apparently, it is misbehavior of a spirit of watchmaker who once lived in the tower, and more time spent on drinking booze than on repair of the clock.
To this day, no one can remedy this and the poor spirit is forced for centuries to drinking and deterioration.
Lublin. Old Town.
One of the most interesting legends of Lublin is the story of the Devil's Court.
In the seventeenth century, in the local Court was a lawsuit of poor widow with rich magnate.
Bribed judges issued an unfair verdict.
Then the widow cried that the devils would have deliver a fairer judgment. On her lament appeared unknown judges in crimson robed and they began the process anew.
Of course they settled the matter in favor of the widow and as the confirmation of the judgment - instead of stamps, one of the judges put his hand to the table and fired at its countertop Devil's paw.
Judges with fear run out from the Court and a figure of Christ on the cross in a nearby church wept tears of blood, and turned head to the wall - not being able to look at the human justice worse than the devil's one.
To this day, in the Cathedral the crucifix is stored, and in Lublin Castle you can see a table with the Devil's paw.
Majdanek concentration camp.
In 1942, at night took place one of the most spectacular escapes in the camp.
Using the time of guards' change before midnight, 86 Soviet prisoners of war flipped blankets on the wires.
Then, on the blankets they put boards and jumped over the fence.
At that time there were only two towers guards, one of which jammed a rifle because of nerves.
Among 86 prisoners, 84 taken refuge in the forest and they were never found.
In retaliation, Germans shot 40 other Soviet prisoners of war in the camp.
The camp commander tried to show in the statistics that 40 killed in the camp were shot while trying to escape, but the fraud was detected quickly.
The commander has been removed from the office after a month.
After year he was arrested.
And after 2 years he was shot in Buchenwald concentration camp - one month before the end of the war, in April 1945.
