On 22 February 1931, while praying in her convent cell in Płock, Sister Faustina experienced the first vision of Jesus Christ. He appeared dressed in a white robe, with two rays of light flowing from His Heart — one pale and one red — and asked that this image be painted with the inscription: “Jesus, I Trust in You.” This moment marked the beginning of the Divine Mercy devotion, which would later spread throughout the world.

“In the evening, when I was in my cell, I saw the Lord Jesus clothed in a white garment. One hand was raised in blessing, while the other touched His garment at His breast. From the opening in the garment at His breast came forth two great rays, one red and the other pale. I gazed at the Lord in silence; my soul was filled with both awe and great joy. After a moment, Jesus said to me:
‘Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the inscription:
Jesus, I trust in You.
I desire that this image be venerated first in your chapel, and then throughout the whole world.'”
