The Only Approved Marian Apparition Site in Poland

Gietrzwałd holds a unique place in the spiritual history of Poland. In 1877 two young girls reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary, events later officially recognized by the Catholic Church. Today pilgrims come here seeking prayer, reflection and a deeper connection with one of Europe’s lesser-known yet profoundly significant Marian sanctuaries.

The Apparition
Beneath the Maple Tree

On 27 June 1877, thirteen-year-old Justyna Szafryńska was praying the Angelus beneath a maple tree when she reported seeing the Virgin Mary. The apparition identified herself as the Immaculate Conception and asked that the Rosary be prayed every day. Her message was simple yet profound: prayer, faith and trust in God’s presence.

“Do not be afraid, for I will always be with you.”

On 27 June 1877, thirteen-year-old Justyna Szafryńska reported seeing a radiant Lady clothed in white beneath a maple tree near the parish church. In the days that followed, another village girl, Barbara Samulowska, also became a witness to the apparitions.

When asked who she was, the Lady replied:

“I am the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception.”

She encouraged the girls to pray the Rosary every day and promised her maternal care to those who remained faithful in prayer. The apparitions continued for more than two months, making Gietrzwałd one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in Poland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical information before your visit to Gietrzwald — travel, prayer, timing and what to expect during the pilgrimage journey.

Is Gietrzwałd officially recognized by the Catholic Church?

Yes. Gietrzwałd is the only Marian apparition site in Poland officially recognized by the Catholic Church. The apparitions took place in 1877 and were witnessed by two young girls, Justyna Szafryńska and Barbara Samulowska.

The apparitions occurred during the Prussian partition of Poland. According to historical accounts, the Virgin Mary spoke to the visionaries in Polish, a language that was then being gradually removed from public life by the Prussian authorities. For many Polish Catholics, this gave the apparitions a special national and spiritual significance.

The Blessed Spring is one of the most visited places in the sanctuary. According to tradition, on 8 September 1877 the Virgin Mary blessed the spring during the apparitions. Pilgrims continue to collect water there as a sign of faith, hope and prayer.

The Rosary Avenue is a peaceful pilgrimage path leading toward the Blessed Spring. Along the route visitors encounter Rosary chapels and places for reflection. Many pilgrims pray the Rosary while walking the avenue, following the message given during the apparitions.

Yes. Holy Mass is celebrated daily in the Basilica. On weekdays Masses are usually celebrated at 7:00 AM, 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM, while Sundays and feast days offer additional services throughout the day.

Most visitors spend between 2 and 3 hours exploring the sanctuary, the apparition site, the basilica, the Rosary Avenue and the Blessed Spring. Many guests also choose additional time for prayer and personal reflection.

According to the accounts of the visionaries, when asked who she was, the Virgin Mary replied:

“I am the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception. I wish that you pray the Rosary every day. Do not be afraid, for I will always be with you.”
